Today's tip
When shopping for canned, whole tomatoes to use in a basic marinara sauce, look for the letters D.O.P.on the label. Those letters insure you are buying genuine tomatoes grown in the San Marzano Valley in Italy. Be careful! Many brands produce San Marzano tomatoes grown outside the valley. Don't be fooled into getting San Marzano "type" tomatoes. Only cans with D.O.P. on the label are the genuine article. Expect to pay more (about $3.49 in New York), but the sauce will be extraordinary!
